Better Bus Stops – Urban Transit Amenities Program

“Urban Transit Amenities” are made up of a wide range of sidewalk installations and elements that provide for the safety, support and comfort and improved mobility of transit riders, pedestrians, and other users of the sidewalk. The most common and recognizable of these are the bus benches and transit shelters. StreetsLA is expanding and improving these transit amenities in the City, with the goal of supporting expanded use of public transit and helping to fulfill the promises of LA’s Green New Deal.
One of StreetsLA’s most exciting initiatives is the new Sidewalk and Transit Amenities Program (STAP), which will transform and modernize the experience for the thousands of Angelenos who rely on our local bus system. Beginning in 2024, over the next decade STAP will add more than 3,000 new bus shelters across the City of Los Angeles.
With a focus on equity, climate resilience, and public comfort, 75% of new shelters will provide shade and weather protection, making it safer and more pleasant for Angelenos to connect to transit.
STAP is led by StreetsLA in partnership with Tranzito-Vector and began implementation in 2024. Please visit the full project website to learn more about STAP and our robust outreach efforts.

The City of Los Angeles’s Bus Bench Program (BBP) ensures that over 6,000 bus benches and 2,000 waste receptacles remain available and well-maintained at transit stops across Los Angeles.
Delivered through agreements with InSite Street Media and Creative Outdoor Advertising, BBP plays a key role in providing clean, comfortable, and accessible public spaces citywide.
Together, STAP and BBP support the goals of the UTA Program, enhancing transit access, creating cooler and more walkable streets, and helping advance LA’s Green New Deal.
